The NSI CommunityKansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LVII against the Philadelphia Eagles, earning the team’s second title in four seasons.
One day later, on Tuesday, Feb. 13, Michigan State University endured a mass shooting where a lone gunman killed three people and left five others in critical condition. In a statement, President Joe Biden noted that the shooting at Michigan State "took place the night before this country marks five years since the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida." Detroit Free Press photographer Ryan Garza was on the scene the night of the shooting and reflects on the somber day. "I noticed the heartbreaking moment from a distance as LeAnn Espinoza stopped by the Sparty statue on campus after her friend was one of the victims shot and in critical condition," said Garza. "Photographing sensitive moments like this is always difficult, but her willingness to share her feelings and story as I sat with her illustrated the impact this event had on campus. No one wants to have to go through what the students, faculty and community went through, but it is important to show and tell the stories of those impacted by gun violence.”
